Expanding HIV Testing & Treatment Access
In 2010, Meteorite principal Stephen Massey helped design and negotiate a multi-year partnership between Greater Than AIDS, a campaign of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, and Walgreens, the country's largest drugstore chain, to promote HIV testing and treatment in heavily-affected communities across the country.
Building on Walgreens' strategic interest to become the most trusted national provider of high quality care and support for people living with HIV, the Greater Than AIDS campaign worked across Walgreens' pharmacy and corporate teams to help transform more than 550 drug store locations into "HIV Centers of Excellence," where pharmacists were available to offer one-on-one medication counseling and other support services that provide customers living with HIV/AIDS – and their families – with compassionate, confidential care.
Greater Than AIDS also leveraged Walgreens’ retail footprint to disseminate information about HIV, tackle stigma, and importantly, inform current and potential customers about the dedicated HIV services that Walgreens offers through its HIV Centers of Excellence. This included the design and roll-out of a targeted in-store communications strategy -- with branded signage, co-branded collateral and informational products, in-store radio announcements, receipt messages and the like -- as well as HIV stigma and sensitivity training for Walgreens staff.
The partnership between Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS was announced on December 1, 2010 and contextualized as part of Walgreens’ larger private sector commitment to the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, released by the Obama White House in July 2010.
